Central Coast Motorcycle Training


Better riders make for better rides! And there is no better way to get started than by taking the California Motorcyclist Safety Program's MTC.

The Classroom.

You'll learn about the different types of motorcycles and how they operate. Practical riding strategies to improve your awareness and decision making. Your instructor will advise what gear to wear for protection and comfort.

The Riding Range.

Exercises are designed to build one skill on top of the other. It begins with the basics; how to operate the controls, straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping. Then on to more advanced skills like cornering, swerving and emergency braking. Range sessions are limit to just 12 students for better individual coaching.

Course Length.

The course is 15.5 hours long -- 6.5 hrs of classroom and 9 hrs of hands-on riding. We have a variety of training schedules. For a list of upcoming classes, call (805) 226-8015 or email ccmt08@sbcglobal.net.

Registration Required.

Classes fill quickly. Registration and payment are required for a guaranteed space in class. To enroll, you must be 15 1/2 years of age or older and have one of the following: a valid (unrestricted driver's license), a valid driving permit, a valid motorcycle permit, or a certificate of completion of drivers education training. We accept a valid license from any state.

What's Included?

A Student Handbook, helmet and motorcycle, or scooter, are provided. We have several different makes and models, all 250cc's or under.

Course Requirements.

Attendance is required at all classrooms and riding sessions and must be completed in a specific order.

You'll need to wear long sleeve shirt and/or jacket that fully covers the midriff and wrists. Sturdy denim pants (no sweats, or 'stretchy jeans'). Leather gloves that cover the fingers and wrist. Boots with sturdy soles and tops that completely cover the ankle (no spike heels or cloth shoes). Eye protection - Rx glasses, sunglasses or face shield.

Classroom Location (CMSP Motorcycle Training Course) Allan Hancock College - 1306 South College Dr. - Room Q12

Building Q is located at the corner of Stowell Rd and College Drive. You will park in the lot on that corner and enter the building from the Stowell Rd side through a chain-link pedestrian gate partially hidden by a bush/tree. As you enter a courtyard, go through the glass door to your right and through the break room. Your classroom will be the first door on the right as you enter the hallway.

Successful Completion.

You'll need to passing a written test and a riding skills evaluation. Upon successful completion, you will receive a DL389 DMV certificate in the mail. Take the DL389 to the DMV for processing. You will NOT have to take the DMV riding test.

Discounts & Rebates.

Dealers, manufacturers, and some rider clubs may offer incentive programs to encourage you to take a CMSP course. Many insurance companies offer discounts and the savings can be as much as the course tuition! Check with your insurance agent. The Graduation Card you receive is proof of your achievement.


The tuition is $258.00 for those 21 and over. $180.00 for those age 15 1/2 to 20 years old.
