Basic Rider Course for Street Riders

Internationally motorcycling attracts people of all ages and backgrounds and our students reflect that trend. Our courses include riders of all ages-- both men and women. All have discovered that better riders make for better rides!

Who attends the BRC?
The average age of our Basic RiderCourse (BRC) students is 45 years old. Approximately 1/3 are women. Some students are under 21 and are required to take the basic course to get their motorcycle license. Others have ridden before and are getting back into motorcycling. Some taught themselves to ride and want to refresh their basic riding skills. A few are back seat riders who want to move to the front seat. Others have heard of the MSF course and want to take it.

Do I need to bring a motorcycle to the BRC?
No, motorcycles and helmets are included in the BRC tuition. We provide several different types of street bikes, all 250cc's or under. They are all different makes and models.

What are the BRC requirements?
To enroll in a BRC you must be 15 1/2 years of age or older and have one of the following: a valid, unrestricted driver's license, or a valid driving permit (class C), or a valid motorcyle permit (Class M), or a certificate of completion of drivers education training. (We accept a valid driver's license from any state.)

What do I need to wear?
A long sleeve shirt and/or jacket (all shirts must cover the midriff.) Long non-flare denim pants or material of equivalent durability (no sweat pants or loose fitting pants.) Leather gloves that cover the fingers and wrist (no skin showing.) Leather or cordura shoes or boots with sturdy soles, and tops that are high enough to completely cover the ankle (no spike heels or cloth shoes.) Glasses or sunglasses.

Am I required to take the BRC?
Yes, if you are under the age of 21 and want to ride a motorcycle on the street, you are required by the California DMV to successfully pass the BRC. If you are a minor, under age 18, your parent or legal guardian must sign the required Waiver Form.

Where is the BRC held?
The BRC is held at both of our training facilities in Santa Maria and Paso Robles. The motorcycle riding portion is taught on an off-street riding range where you can learn safely without having to worry about traffic.

In Santa Maria our classrooms are held at the Santa Maria Inn at 801 S. Broadway, Santa Maria, CA 93454. Our riding range is held at the Santa Maria Fairpark at 937 S. Thornburg, Santa Maria, CA 93454.

In Paso Robles our classrooms are held in the Community Room at The Pavilion on the Lake, 9315 Pismo Ave. in Atascadero, CA, 93422. Our riding range is held at the California Mid-State Fair at the corner of 24th St. & Riverside Ave., Paso Robles, CA 93446.

How long is the BRC?
The BRC is 15 hours long. It is usually broken up over four days -- two 2-1/2 hour classrooms and two 5 hour riding sessions. However we have a variety of schedules, so please call us at (805) 461-3285 to find a schedule that works for you.

When is the BRC held?
We have a variety of training schedules. Most classrooms are held on weeknights and the riding ranges are held on weekends and/or weekdays for the convenience of students and working adults. Classes are held all year around except for major holidays. For a complete schedule of upcoming classes, please call (805) 461-3285. Pre-registration is recommended.

Can I just go to the first class?
While we do accept walk-ins, it is on a space available basis only. Since most classes fill several weeks in advance, we recommend that you call us at (805) 461-3285 prior to the class to check on availability. Pre-registration is recommended so you can have a guaranteed space in the class.

What is taught in the BRC classroom?
In the BRC classroom you will learn about the different types of motorcycles, their controls, how they operate, and how to become a responsible rider. Your RiderCoach will advise you on what gear to wear for protection and comfort. You'll find out how alcohol and other drugs adversely affect your ability to ride safely. You will be given a student handbook in the first classroom session.

What is taught on the BRC riding range?
The BRC starts everyone out as if they've never ridden before. The riding range is designed to build one skill on top of the other. It begins with all the basics like how to operate motorcycle controls properly, straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping. Then you will move on to more advanced skills like cornering, swerving and emergency braking. We limit the course to just 12 students in each riding section with two instructors for individual coaching.

After I pass the BRC, how do I get my license?
To successfully complete the BRC, you must attend all classroom and riding sessions and pass written and riding tests. You will then receive a DL389 DMV certificate and a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Graduation Card. If you do have a valid motorcyle permit, you will take the DL389 to the California DMV and they will give you your motorcycle license. If you do not have a motorcycle permit, you will take the DL389 to DMV and take the vison and the written DMV motorcycle tests only. Once you have passed you will go directly to getting a motorcycle license. In either case you will NOT have to take a motorcycle to DMV and take the DMV riding test.

What about discounts & rebates?
Dealers, manufacturers, and some rider clubs offer incentive programs to encourage you to take a RiderCourse. The Graduation Card you receive after completing the courses is proof of your achievement. Some rebate programs require an additional proof of payment receipt. If you need one, please contact our office at (805) 461-3285. Many insurance companies offer discounts to RiderCourse graduates. In some cases, the savings can be as much as the course tuition itself. Check with your insurance agent. The card you receive after completing the course is proof of your graduation.

How much does the BRC cost?
The BRC tuition is $250.00 for those 21 and over. Tuition is $150.00 for those age 15 1/2 to 20 years old.
